PARLIAMENT QUESTION: DEPLOYMENT OF SMALL MODULAR REACTORS (SMRs)

• Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are advanced nuclear reactors (typically 16–300 MWe) with factory-fabricated modular components, suited for remote areas, captive industrial use, and replacing retiring fossil plants.
• India's Nuclear Energy Mission (Union Budget 2025–26) provides ₹20,000 crore for R&D and deployment of indigenous SMRs; targets at least 5 operational indigenous SMRs by 2033 and 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047.
• Three indigenous SMR designs are under development: BSMR-200 (220 MWe), SMR-55 (55 MWe), and a 5 MWth high-temperature gas-cooled reactor for hydrogen generation.
