Safe Reuse of Treated Water Gains Momentum; Policy Notified in Uttarakhand
- SRTW = institutionalised reuse of treated sewage/wastewater for non-potable purposes (industry, construction, horticulture, flushing, irrigation), driven by the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) via the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).
- A National Framework for Safe Reuse of Treated Water was published by NMCG (2022) and circulated to all States/UTs as a template for State-level reuse policies.
- Uttarakhand has now notified its State SRTW policy (announced via PIB, March 2026), becoming a flagship implementer.
- UPSC relevance: water security, river rejuvenation (Namami Gange), urban governance, circular economy, SDG-6.
