Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu attains First Criticality

• PFBR Kalpakkam is India's first 500 MWe indigenous sodium-cooled Fast Breeder Reactor, operationalised by BHAVINI under the Department of Atomic Energy.
• It marks India's formal entry into Stage II of the Three-Stage Nuclear Power Programme envisioned by Dr Homi Bhabha.
• Achievement of first criticality on 6 April 2026 makes India the second country after Russia to operate a commercial-scale FBR.
