Census 2027: India’s First Digital Enumeration Exercise
- 16th Census of India and the first fully digital enumeration, using mobile apps and a self-enumeration web portal instead of paper schedules.
- First census to include caste enumeration since 1931, per Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) decision of 30 April 2025.
- Conducted by the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India (ORGI) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, governed by the Census Act, 1948.
- Approved outlay of ₹11,718.24 crore; data centres designated as Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) under the IT Act.
