India's telecom diplomacy — the record

• The Bharat 6G Alliance has signed MoUs with the NextG Alliance (USA), 6G IA (Europe) and 6G Flagship, Oulu University (Finland), aligning research priorities across blocs [3].

A critical assessment

• Diplomacy has outpaced capability: India's patent pool, chip fabrication and core R&D spending remain thin relative to its 2030 ambition [1].
• Aligning with a US-anchored security bloc constrains India's traditional strategic autonomy and its sourcing options.
• Alliance MoUs are non-binding; without commercialised indigenous IP, India risks remaining a large market rather than a rule-maker.

India's 6G engagement is best read as hedged multi-alignment — partnering simultaneously with American, European and Nordic ecosystems. Converting this diplomatic capital into marks requires deepening the semiconductor and patent base so that participation in standards bodies rests on demonstrated capability. Done well, 6G becomes the telecom expression of Atmanirbhar Bharat: autonomy secured through partnership, not isolation.
