Artificial Intelligence is displacing routine cognitive work itself — coding, quality control, molecule screening — so the policy test is not whether classrooms use AI, but whether schooling prepares learners for jobs that will still exist. India's response, anchored in NEP 2020 and NCF 2023, is a credible start but remains largely AI-as-subject rather than AI-as-labour-market-shift.

Strengths of the policy response

  • Curricular embedding: NEP 2020 flagged AI as a priority skill area; CBSE runs a 15-hour AI module from Class VI and AI as an optional subject in Classes IX–XII [1].
  • Early-stage AI readiness: CBSE's Computational Thinking and AI curriculum for Classes 3–8 (2026-27) pushes exposure below the secondary stage [2].
  • Equity through technology: NCERT used AI/ML to translate primary textbooks into 22 Indian languages, widening access [1].
  • Skilling beyond school: IndiaAI FutureSkills adds 570 Data and AI Labs in ITIs/polytechnics and an expanded IndiaAI Fellowship of 13,500 scholars, aligning courses to industry demand [3].
  • Global benchmarking: UNESCO's AI Competency Framework for Students — 12 competencies, four dimensions, three levels — offers a ready template for curriculum design [4].

Critical gaps

  • Content, not vocation: the curriculum teaches about AI; it does not restructure streams around work AI will not absorb — care, craft, judgment, complex problem-solving.
  • Teacher capacity: a large majority of educators lack adequate digital-AI competence, and UNESCO's Teacher Framework — covering AI pedagogy and professional learning — is yet to be systematically localised [1][5].
  • Federal unevenness: rollout is CBSE/NCERT-led; state boards, which teach most children, adopt unevenly.
  • Infrastructure and equity: lab-and-connectivity gaps risk confining AI-readiness to urban, better-resourced schools.
  • Weak education–employment feedback loop: no institutional mechanism translates observed labour-market displacement into curricular revision.

India's architecture is directionally right but calibrated to a slower disruption than the one underway. The way forward lies in continuous teacher re-skilling under a localised UNESCO-style competency framework, state-board convergence, and a standing education–industry mechanism that revises curricula as occupations change — converting NEP 2020's promise of holistic, future-ready education into genuine employability.
