BRICS expansion since 2024 has diluted its original identity as a coherent bloc of emerging economies. Discuss with reference to recent geopolitical fault lines among its members.

In this answer
  1. How expansion has diluted coherence
  2. Recent geopolitical fault lines

From a five-nation caucus of large emerging economies, BRICS has grown to eleven full members with the 2024 accession of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Indonesia's entry in 2025, and a ten-nation Partner Country tier created at Kazan (2024) [1]. Expansion has widened its representativeness but thinned the shared economic logic that once defined it.

How expansion has diluted coherence

  • Membership by political motive, not economic convergence: new entrants joined for divergent reasons — Iran and Egypt seeking sanctions relief and financial alternatives, Indonesia economic diversification, the UAE pragmatic multilateralism — rather than a common emerging-market agenda [2].
  • Consensus costs: a larger, more heterogeneous table makes negotiating joint declarations harder, since BRICS operates by consensus [2].
  • Competing visions of purpose: Russia and China frame BRICS as a counterweight to Western dominance, while India and Brazil resist an anti-Western identity and guard their ties with Washington [2].

Recent geopolitical fault lines

  • West Asia: the Iran–Israel–US conflict places Iran and the UAE, both members, on opposing sides of active hostilities, obstructing a common narrative for the New Delhi Summit.
  • Currency and trade friction: US tariff threats over intra-BRICS local-currency payment mechanisms expose members to differing exposure and risk appetite on "de-dollarisation".
  • India's balancing act: simultaneous membership of BRICS and the Quad means India must temper bloc rhetoric it cannot afford strategically.

The counter-view Dilution is not disintegration. India's fourth Chairship (theme: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability) has sustained functional cooperation through sectoral tracks — the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting at Gurugram, health and youth working groups [3][4].

Expansion has thus traded ideological tightness for demographic and economic heft. The realistic path is to reposition BRICS as an issue-based coalition of the Global South — development finance through the NDB, energy access, technology and reform of global governance — rather than a bloc demanding uniform political alignment. India's 2026 Presidency, anchored in strategic autonomy, is well placed to steer it there.
