India has explored only a fraction of its Obvious Geological Potential area, while the Cabinet-approved National Critical Mineral Mission commits ₹34,300 crore over seven years to secure minerals vital for green technologies [1]. Hackathons are emerging as a low-cost, high-speed instrument to convert legacy geoscience data into drill-ready targets.

How hackathons accelerate exploration

  • Data-to-discovery: participants build AI models on geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing and borehole datasets to target concealed, deep-seated deposits of REE, Ni-PGE and copper — exactly the deposits conventional surface surveys miss [2].
  • Crowdsourcing beyond the state agency: the IndiaAI Mission–Geological Survey of India hackathon opened mineral targeting to startups, academia and data scientists, widening the talent pool available to GSI [3].
