Its adoption in rural India — from PM GatiShakti's GIS-based National Master Plan to the Sujalam Bharat Digital Public Infrastructure — has strengthened evidence-based governance, though outcomes remain constrained by data quality and institutional capacity.

Strengths in planning

  • Integrated spatial planning: PM GatiShakti's GIS portal carries 1,400-plus data layers of central and state infrastructure, enabling ministries to plan connectivity on a single map instead of in silos [1].
  • Unique spatial identifiers: the Sujal Gaon ID under Sujalam Bharat links each rural water scheme to the households it serves, ending ambiguity over service coverage [2].

Strengths in monitoring

Anchored in privacy safeguards and panchayat ownership, GIS can make rural infrastructure genuinely durable and advance SDG-6.
