Assam floods almost every monsoon because the Brahmaputra–Barak system combines extreme rainfall with one of the world's highest sediment loads [2]. Yet the rising damage — as in the July 2026 Upper Assam floods across Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat [5] — shows that human interventions, not rainfall alone, decide the scale of the disaster.

Natural hydrological drivers

  • High sediment yield: the young, seismically active Himalayan catchment sheds huge silt; the abrupt fall in gradient at the plains causes deposition that raises riverbeds and shrinks channel capacity [2].
  • Synchronised tributary peaks: intense monsoon spells make tributaries like the Dikhow, Disang, Darika and Janji crest together with the mainstem [5].

Anthropogenic factors that compound them

  • Catchment degradation: deforestation, hill-cutting, quarrying and unregulated coal mining in the Assam–Nagaland border hills are alleged to have increased silt inflow into the Dikhow basin — a causal link officially contested, but consistent with known catchment hydrology.
