Discuss the evolution of Poshan Abhiyaan into Mission Poshan 2.0 and evaluate its impact on child and maternal nutrition indicators in India.
In this answer
Launched on 8 March 2018 from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, Poshan Abhiyaan sought to tackle undernutrition through convergence and community mobilisation; its restructuring into Mission Poshan 2.0 marked a shift from a targeted campaign to an integrated nutrition-and-early-childhood ecosystem, with measurable but uneven gains.
Evolution of the mission
- Consolidation (2021-22): the Union Budget merged the Supplementary Nutrition Programme and Poshan Abhiyaan into the umbrella Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 under the Ministry of Women and Child Development [1].
- Widened mandate: three verticals — nutrition support for children, pregnant women, lactating mothers and adolescent girls; Early Childhood Care and Education (3-6 years) with early stimulation for 0-3 years; and Saksham Anganwadi infrastructure upgradation [1].
- Digital governance: the Poshan Tracker app, rolled out on 1 March 2021, monitors Anganwadi centres, workers and beneficiaries on defined indicators, strengthening last-mile delivery [1]. Over 13 lakh Anganwadi workers now use smartphones linked to it [2].
- Jan Andolan platform: Poshan Maah (September) and Poshan Pakhwada (March) sustain behaviour-change communication; the 8th Poshan Maah (2025) was launched alongside the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan and PMMVY disbursals [3].
Evaluating the impact
- Gains: NFHS-5 (2019-21) shows stunting down from 38.4% to 35.5% and underweight prevalence from 35.8% to 32.1% [2] — a clear directional improvement, aided by convergence with maternal cash transfers.
- Persisting concerns: over one-third of children remain stunted; wasting has proved most resistant, and anaemia among women and children remains widespread, indicating that dietary diversity and micronutrient quality lag behind calorie delivery.
- Structural limits: outcomes depend on Anganwadi staffing, sanitation and infrastructure; 2 lakh centres are still being upgraded to Saksham Anganwadis [2], so delivery quality varies across states.
Mission Poshan 2.0 has thus converted a campaign into a durable, digitally monitored nutrition architecture, with indicators improving steadily rather than dramatically. Sustaining this requires shifting focus from coverage to nutritional quality — dietary diversity, anaemia control and maternal health — supported by full Saksham Anganwadi upgradation. Realising the vision of a Suposhit Bharat by 2047 [2] would also advance SDG-2 (Zero Hunger) and the constitutional duty under Article 47 to raise nutrition levels.
