Progress achieved
- India crossed 300.50 GW of installed non-fossil capacity as on 31 July 2026 — over 60% of the 500 GW goal [1].

- This continues an established record: the COP21 pledge of 40% non-fossil capacity was achieved in November 2021, nine years ahead of schedule [4].

Structural challenges
- Capacity is not generation: renewables have far lower utilisation factors than thermal, so the 54% capacity share translates into a much smaller share of electricity actually supplied.
- Uneven sourcing: firm, dispatchable non-fossil options lag badly — nuclear stands at only 8.78 GW and hydro at 57.24 GW, against solar's 164.59 GW [1].
- Land, clearances and DISCOM finances: acquisition delays and financially stressed distribution companies weaken payment security for developers.
Grid-integration challenges
- Solar and wind together contribute 222.73 GW of variable, weather-dependent output [1], straining balancing and frequency management.
- Generation is concentrated in a few resource-rich states, demanding large inter-state transmission corridors.
- Storage capacity and flexible balancing resources must scale alongside, or curtailment will rise.
India's Panchamrit journey shows that ambitious targets, backed by consistent bidding and policy support, can be met ahead of time. The next phase must shift focus from adding megawatts to integrating them — through storage obligations, transmission build-out and DISCOM reform. Aligning this with SDG-7 and SDG-13 would let India convert a capacity milestone into genuine energy security.
