Launched in February 2016 alongside the Operational Guidelines, the National Framework for Malaria Elimination (NFME) 2016-2030 is India's fifteen-year roadmap to end indigenous malaria transmission [1][2]. Its architecture is deliberately phased and equity-focused, and the sharp fall in burden since 2015 shows the design is working.

Strategic architecture of the NFME

  • Milestone-based sequencing: elimination in low and moderate transmission States by 2022, incidence below 1 case per 1000 population in all States/UTs by 2024, zero indigenous cases by 2027, and prevention of re-establishment to sustain elimination through 2030 [1].
  • Category-wise differentiation: States and districts are stratified by endemicity so that high-burden areas receive intensified control while low-burden areas shift to surveillance and case-based response [1].
