Distinguish between Mission Mausam and Project Mausam, highlighting their respective objectives.

In this answer
  1. Mission Mausam — objectives
  2. Project Mausam — objectives

Despite the shared name, Mission Mausam and Project Mausam are unrelated initiatives of different ministries — one a weather-forecasting technology mission, the other a maritime-cultural diplomacy project. Conflating them is a common error worth clearing at the outset.

Mission Mausam — objectives

  • Ministry of Earth Sciences Central Sector Scheme, Cabinet-approved September 2024 (₹2,000 crore, 2024–26), launched by the PM on 14 January 2025 [1].
  • Goal: make India "Weather-ready and Climate-smart" via next-gen radars, satellites and an Earth-system early-warning framework [2].
  • Executed by IMD, IITM and NCMRWF; backed by new High-Performance Computing systems ARKA and ARUNIKA, raising capacity to 21.91 petaflops [1].
  • Targets resilience against cyclones, floods and heatwaves — a disaster-preparedness and S&T thrust [1].

Project Mausam — objectives

  • Ministry of Culture initiative launched 2014 at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Doha [3].
  • Goal: revive historical maritime and cultural links among Indian Ocean littoral nations, tracing monsoon-driven trade routes [3].
  • Implemented via ASI, IGNCA and the National Museum; seeks UNESCO recognition of a transnational heritage route — a soft-power/cultural-diplomacy thrust [3].

Together they reflect India's twin ambitions — scientific self-reliance in weather services and cultural leadership across the Indian Ocean — advancing both disaster resilience and civilisational diplomacy under a shared evocative name.
