Examine how India's Digital Public Infrastructure has enabled its fintech sector to gain global visibility.

In this answer
  1. How DPI created the enabling base
  2. How this translated into global visibility
  3. Regulatory maturing

Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) refers to open, interoperable digital rails — identity, payments and data — built as public goods. India's JAM trinity (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile) and UPI have converted these rails into a fintech ecosystem that the world now studies, invests in and seeks to replicate.

How DPI created the enabling base

  • Identity and account access: over 530 million Jan Dhan accounts in a decade brought a population comparable to the EU into the banking system, creating the customer base fintechs monetise [1].
  • Connectivity: broadband users rose from 60 million to 940 million, giving payment applications population-scale reach [1].
  • Open payment rails: UPI enabled 24×7 low-cost transfers across villages and cities, displacing the "cash is king" mindset [1].

How this translated into global visibility

  • Scale as a signal: nearly half of the world's real-time digital transactions occur in India, making it the largest fintech population by transaction volume [1].
  • Investor recognition: India ranked among the top three most-funded fintech ecosystems globally in the first half of 2025 [2].
  • A convening platform: the Global Fintech Fest, running since 2020, draws central banks, regulators and global investors to Mumbai; its 7th edition (8–11 September 2026) was inaugurated by the Prime Minister [3].
  • Fintech diplomacy: the UK–India Fintech Corridor, with the UK as partner country at GFF 2025, links start-up scaling to GIFT City–London Stock Exchange cooperation [2].

Regulatory maturing

  • Regulators use these platforms to seed innovation — SEBI launched the Securities Market TechSprint at GFF 2026 [4], signalling a shift from passive oversight to co-creation.

DPI thus supplied trust, scale and interoperability, which together converted domestic inclusion into international credibility. The next step is consolidating this soft power through exportable DPI templates, robust data protection and cyber resilience, so that India is recognised not merely as the world's largest fintech market but as the standard-setter for inclusive digital finance.
