Examine the need for biobanking of indigenous microbial diversity in India. What ethical and governance challenges does it pose?
Biobanking is the systematic collection, cryopreservation and catalogued storage of microbial strains and metagenomic data with linked dietary and demographic metadata. With India's tribal populations forming under 1% of global human microbiome samples, and their traditional diets rapidly shifting, such conservation is now a race against time.
Why biobanking is needed
- Vanishing biological heritage: a study of eight tribal populations found 14 previously unknown bacterial species and nearly 200 locally distinct strains; a minority of subjects already showed microbiomes converging with industrialised Californian profiles, indicating erosion under globalisation [1].
- Correcting research under-representation: imported probiotics are built on strains adapted to Western diets. Trans-Himalayan dairy- and grain-eating groups carried Bifidobacterium adolescentis strains genetically distinct from industrialised ones, encoding diet-selected carbohydrate-active enzymes [1].
- Therapeutic and economic value: preserved strains enable region-specific probiotics, precision nutrition and drug-response research for India's rising non-communicable disease burden.
- Existing institutional base: the DBT-supported Indian Human Microbiome Initiative, led by NCCS Pune, has profiled over 3,400 individuals from 10 endogamous and 7 tribal communities — a repository is the logical next step [2].
Ethical challenges
- Informed consent is difficult where literacy is low and decision-making is communal; individual consent may not substitute for community consent.
- Biopiracy and benefit-sharing: commercialising tribal-derived strains without returns violates the access-and-benefit-sharing mandate of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 [3].
- Group privacy: microbiome data linked to identifiable small communities risks stigmatisation.
Governance challenges
- Regulatory ambiguity: the 2023 amendment eased approvals — registration for domestic entities, NBA approval for foreign ones — but its application to microbial and digital sequence data remains untested [4].
- Fragmented custodianship across DBT, MoEFCC/NBA and ethics committees demands single-window clearance.
- Sustained funding, cold-chain infrastructure and data sovereignty over sequence repositories.
Biobanking thus converts a fragile dietary heritage into a durable national scientific asset. A dedicated national microbiome repository, built on prior community consent, transparent benefit-sharing and interoperable public databases, would let India lead in microbiome science while honouring the constitutional commitment to protect tribal communities and their knowledge.
