A port is only as efficient as its hinterland link; on India's eastern seaboard, saturated trunk lines — not berth capacity — have been the binding constraint. Recent investment shows the chosen instrument is capacity augmentation of existing corridors rather than greenfield lines.
Direct port-bound capacity creation

Gains and gaps
- Higher line capacity shortens transit and wagon turnaround, lowering logistics costs and enabling modal shift from road; wider connectivity is claimed for about 6,448 villages and 60 lakh people [1].
- However, gestation is long (2030-31), land acquisition and right-of-way depend on state cooperation, and dedicated freight capacity on the east-coast route remains thinner than on the Eastern DFC [4].
Port connectivity is thus being strengthened less by new alignments than by systematically de-bottlenecking the eastern and southern trunk corridors under a common multimodal framework. Sustaining this requires timely land acquisition, last-mile port-gate links, and evacuation planning aligned with projected cargo growth — converting multitracking into genuine gains in India's freight competitiveness.
