Integrative taxonomy describes species by combining classical morphology and chemistry with multi-locus DNA sequencing, rather than appearance alone. For a megadiverse country like India — where the Zoological Survey of India's annual Animal Discoveries report added a record 709 faunal species to the national database in 2025 [1] — this method has become the decisive tool for turning field collection into verified documentation.

Why morphology alone is insufficient

  • Cryptic diversity: the recent Western Ghats study of the script-lichen genus Allographa found that morphologically similar species are not necessarily closely related evolutionarily, exposing the error risk in physical-trait keys [2].
  • Micro-organisms and lichens offer few stable characters; identification of Allographa in India long lacked molecular grounding despite the genus having 200+ species globally [2].

How integration advances documentation
