Wildlife corridors are narrow habitat linkages that keep protected areas functionally connected. For India — home to over 60% of the world's wild Asian elephants [4] and 150 ground-validated elephant corridors across 15 range states [2] — securing these passages is now as much a data problem as a forestry one.

Why corridor management needs a technological turn

  • Corridors are fragmented by linear infrastructure, mining and plantations; most lie outside protected areas on revenue or private land, making conflict a recurring outcome.
  • Project Elephant (1992), a centrally sponsored scheme, historically depended on foot patrolling and ground survey [3] — inadequate for monitoring 33 Elephant Reserves spanning about 80,777 sq km [2].

How technology strengthens corridor governance

  • Geospatial mapping: enables delineation and ground-validation of corridors and overlays them with land-use data to locate pinch points, giving states a defensible basis for notification — as with the recent Lemru, Agasthyamalai and Terai reserves [2].
  • Remote sensing: satellite-based tracking of land-use change detects encroachment and habitat loss early, before a corridor is severed.
  • Artificial Intelligence: MoEF&CC states that India combines AI, remote sensing and geospatial mapping with traditional knowledge to protect elephant habitats [1] — supporting early-warning alerts to railways and villages in high-conflict stretches.

Limits of the technological approach

  • Technology maps a corridor but cannot grant it legal status; enforcement gaps persist.
  • Costs, trained manpower and data quality vary sharply across states.

Technology has shifted corridor management from reactive patrolling to predictive, evidence-led planning. Its full value will be realised when geospatial corridor layers are made binding inputs in infrastructure clearances and backed by statutory protection, blended with community stewardship. Such a coexistence model advances SDG 15 (Life on Land) and India's constitutional duty under Article 51A(g).
