Examine the significance of cross-border real-time payment corridors like Favara-UPI for regional economic integration and remittance flows.

In this answer
  1. Significance for remittance flows
  2. Significance for regional economic integration
  3. Limitations to address

The Favara-UPI corridor, operationalised on 30 July 2026 by the Maldives Monetary Authority with NPCI International Payments Limited, links the Maldives' instant payment system with India's UPI, making UPI services available in a ninth country [1]. Such corridors convert domestic digital public infrastructure (DPI) into an instrument of regional integration, though their present reach remains narrow.

Significance for remittance flows

  • Speed and cost: transfers initiated in Maldivian Rufiyaa are credited in Indian Rupees in real time, bypassing multi-day correspondent-banking chains and their layered charges [1].
  • Formalisation: cheaper legal channels draw family-maintenance and gift remittances away from hawala, improving traceability and AML compliance [1].
  • Scale advantage: the receiving leg rides on a network of about 55.49 crore UPI users, so no new instrument or account is needed at the beneficiary's end [2].

Significance for regional economic integration

  • Interoperability template: it proves two sovereign real-time systems can be API-linked, replicating earlier UPI linkages with Singapore, UAE, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France and Qatar [3].
  • Local-currency settlement reduces third-currency dependence, supporting the RBI's rupee-internationalisation push.
  • Trade and tourism: the planned second phase of QR-based merchant payments will directly serve Indian tourists in a tourism-dependent economy [1].
  • Strategic depth: DPI export operationalises Neighbourhood First and SAGAR, deepening economic interdependence in the Indian Ocean Region.

Limitations to address

  • Presently one-way (Maldives to India) and confined to permitted remittance categories, with only two partner banks onboarded [1].
  • Exchange-rate pass-through, cyber-fraud and cross-border data-governance questions remain unsettled.

Cross-border corridors thus shift regional integration from tariff-centred cooperation to infrastructure-led interdependence, where payments become the connective tissue of trade, tourism and diaspora ties. Extending the corridor to two-way merchant transactions, harmonising grievance redress and building joint cyber-resilience protocols would maximise gains — advancing SDG 10.c on lowering remittance costs and consolidating India's role as a trusted DPI partner in its neighbourhood.
