Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) — the detection, tracking and neutralisation of hostile submarines — is hardest precisely where India is most vulnerable: its shallow, acoustically cluttered littorals. The commissioning of INS Malvan at Karwar on 22 July 2026 [1] underlines why littoral ASW has become central to India's maritime security.

The littoral threat environment

  • Growing extra-regional submarine and undersea activity in the Indian Ocean places India's ports, harbour approaches, offshore energy assets and sea lanes at risk.
  • Shallow water degrades sonar performance through reverberation and thermal layering; large destroyers and frigates are ill-suited to operate there, leaving a capability gap that dedicated craft must fill [3].

Capability delivered by shallow-water ASW craft

Littoral ASW is therefore not a niche naval function but the inner ring of India's maritime deterrence. Sustaining it demands faster serial induction, networked underwater domain awareness and continued indigenisation — consistent with India's SAGAR vision of being the region's preferred security partner.
