Arctic amplification is the tendency of the Arctic to warm several times faster than the global average, because regional feedbacks magnify the same greenhouse forcing. Mechanisms driving amplification

  • Ice–albedo feedback: retreating sea ice and snow expose darker ocean and land, which absorb solar radiation instead of reflecting it, melting more ice — a self-reinforcing loop.
  • Vegetation feedback ("Arctic greening"): taller shrubs and grasses now protrude above the snowpack, darkening the surface, while trapping snow that insulates soil and eases summer permafrost thaw [2].
  • Ocean feedback: with less ice cover, the Arctic Ocean absorbs carbon dioxide three to four times faster than other oceans, driving acidification [1].
