Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) is a layered shield of radars, command networks and interceptors that destroy incoming missiles in the exo- and endo-atmosphere. DRDO's three consecutive flight-tests of 10–11 June 2026, demonstrating multi-layered interception plus the maiden Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM-MR) test, show that such a shield speaks simultaneously to adversaries, partners and the domestic industrial base [1].

As a military capability

• Layered interception: Phase-I pairs Prithvi Air Defence (exo-atmospheric) with Advanced Air Defence (endo-atmospheric); Phase-II's AD-1, a two-stage solid-propellant interceptor with indigenous guidance and navigation algorithms, extends coverage to longer-range threats [3][4].
• Sea-based extension: the 2023 interceptor trial from an Indian Navy platform added a mobile, forward-deployable layer [2].
• Survivability, not shield-proofing: BMD protects national command authority and retaliatory assets, reinforcing credible minimum deterrence and No-First-Use rather than replacing them [1].

As a diplomatic signal

• Threshold signalling: India joins a small group of states — the USA, Russia, China and Israel — with BMD claimed against intercontinental-class missiles, an entry marker of strategic status [1].
• Deterrence by uncertainty: an adversary can no longer assume a first strike disarms India, raising the cost of coercion.
• Autonomy: indigenous interceptors reduce dependence on imported systems and signal Atmanirbhar Bharat in critical defence technology [1].
• Caveat: BMD can be read as destabilising, inviting adversary countermeasures such as MIRVs and decoys — a regional arms-race risk.

BMD is therefore a dual-purpose instrument: technically a defensive layer, strategically a statement of capability and self-reliance. Its value will be realised through fused radar–interceptor–command integration across services, calibrated transparency to reassure neighbours, and continued indigenisation — anchoring a defensive posture consistent with India's declaratory nuclear doctrine.
