  1. Access: how integration helps
  2. Safety: the concerns
  3. Accountability: the concerns

Integrative medicine brings traditional (Ayush) and modern medicine into one health system. In 2026 the Ministry of Ayush released Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs) on skin disorders, prepared by the Ayush Vertical of the DGHS [1]. They show integration widening access, while gaps in drug safety and regulation remain.

Access: how integration helps

  • Institutional convergence: STGs for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy, with Yoga included, cover psoriasis, vitiligo and dermatitis. They were field-tested with Delhi's primary-care Medical Officers [1].
  • Affordability: Ayush hospitals are being asked to adopt STGs and ICD-TM2 coding so that they can be listed for insurance payments [2].
  • Reach: National Ayush Mission hospitals and Ayush Health & Wellness Centres extend care to under-served areas [4].
  • Global acceptance: India co-hosted the 2nd WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine in New Delhi in December 2025 [3].

Safety: the concerns

  • Evidence gap: The STGs are "evidence-informed". They rest on classical texts and expert consensus, not randomised trials [1].
  • Drug quality: The Parliamentary Standing Committee flagged high metal content in Ayush drugs and asked for post-marketing surveillance [4].
  • Under-reporting: Since 2018, only 1,637 adverse drug reactions have been reported, against 32,527 misleading advertisements [6].
  • Delayed referral: Patients with serious skin disease may reach modern care late if referral rules are ignored.

Accountability: the concerns

  • False cure claims: Complaints about misleading Ayush ads rose from 7,771 (2023) to 16,129 (2025). Action depends on State Licensing Authorities under the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954 [7].
  • Reactive regulation: The Ayush Suraksha portal (2025) was set up only after a Supreme Court order of 30 July 2024 [5].
  • Weak delivery: More than 69% of approved integrated Ayush hospitals are still under construction, and only 65% of Ayush Health & Wellness Centres have been set up [4]. Health is a State subject, so uptake will be uneven.
STGs → insurance coding → wider ACCESS
   ↓ need
drug quality + ADR reporting + ad enforcement → SAFETY & ACCOUNTABILITY

Access gains last only if the safety system keeps pace.

Recent Ayush initiatives therefore widen access faster than they build safeguards. The way forward is to:

  • have the Research Councils run outcome studies on the STG protocols;
  • link STG-based prescriptions to adverse-reaction reporting on Ayush Suraksha;
  • bring Ayush drug standards in line with international norms, as the Standing Committee recommended [4].

Evidence-backed integration of this kind would advance universal health coverage under SDG 3 and the right to health under Article 21.
