  1. Tool for ecosystem restoration
  2. Tool for diplomacy
  3. Limits

Project Cheetah began on 17 September 2022. It is the world's first inter-continental translocation of a large carnivore [2]. India now has 60 cheetahs, 41 of them born in India [1]. The project shows that bringing back an apex predator can both restore ecosystems and build diplomatic ties, but neither goal is fully achieved yet.

Tool for ecosystem restoration

  • Umbrella species: the cheetah is the flagship for grasslands and semi-arid ecosystems, which policy has long neglected. Protecting it also protects its prey and other grassland wildlife [2].
  • Habitat recovery: 24 villages were relocated, freeing about 6,258 ha of inviolate grassland at Kuno. These grasslands also act as carbon sinks [2].
  • Breeding as evidence: second-generation litters from Mukhi, KGP12 and KJP21 suggest that prey and habitat are adequate [1].
  • Local stake: 450+ "Cheetah Mitras" (local volunteers) and a 5% share of eco-tourism revenue give communities a reason to support the project [2].

Tool for diplomacy

  • India–Africa partnership: India signed MoUs with Namibia (2022) and South Africa (2023) covering translocation, training and technology transfer [2]. Botswana gifted eight cheetahs during the President's visit [3]. KJP21's cubs are the first with a Botswanan father, which adds a new genetic lineage [1].
  • International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA): launched in April 2023 and headquartered in India, it has ₹150 crore of support and covers all seven big cats [2]. It turns India's experience with tigers and cheetahs into soft power and South–South cooperation.

Limits

  • Carrying capacity: Kuno can support only about 21 cheetahs, or 36 across the wider landscape [4], against today's 60. Animals stray far outside the park: Gamini's family alone ranges over about 6,160 km² [2].
  • Mortality: seven deaths in the first year, including from infection and heat stress [5].
  • Dependence on imports: new animals are expected for five years, and each batch depends on a diplomatic deal [2].
  • Subspecies debate: the animals are African cheetahs. The Asiatic subspecies, which once lived in India, survives only in Iran and is Critically Endangered [6].

In Project Cheetah, ecology and diplomacy support each other: African partners supply the founding animals, and India's restored grasslands and IBCA give the partnership a purpose. To make this last, India should get Gandhi Sagar working as a second site [7], increase prey numbers and publish post-mortem findings. Success should be measured in self-sustaining adult cheetahs rather than cub counts. On that basis, the model can advance SDG 15 and India's CBD commitments [2].
