  1. Air power in calibrated deterrence
  2. Importance of indigenous aerospace platforms

Calibrated deterrence means showing resolve by imposing a precise, limited cost on an adversary without sliding into full-scale war. PIB described Operation Sindoor as a "precise, calibrated and effective" use of air power [1]. Such deterrence stays credible only if India can field and sustain enough aircraft from its own industrial base.

Air power in calibrated deterrence

  • Precision and speed: air strikes can hit chosen targets within hours. This keeps the response proportionate and the escalation controlled [1].
  • Integrated planning: PIB links Sindoor's lessons to credible deterrence and integrated planning, which strengthens the case for jointness [1].
  • Reach through partners: at Tarang Shakti 2026, partner refuellers and airlifters (KC-30A, MRTT, A400M) flew alongside the IAF, which allowed long-range composite missions to be practised [3].
  • Limit of numbers: the IAF had only 31 fighter squadrons against 42 authorised (December 2024) [4]. A smaller fleet leaves fewer options for keeping up pressure over time.

Importance of indigenous aerospace platforms

  • Assured supply in a crisis: India was the world's second-largest arms importer in 2020–24 [4]. Imported spares and weapons can be withheld exactly when they are needed.
  • Proven capability: LCA Tejas and LCH Prachand flew at Tarang Shakti 2026, showing indigenous design and manufacturing [2].
  • Scale-up: the ₹62,370 crore contract for 97 LCA Mk1A has more than 64% indigenous content. However, deliveries begin only in 2027-28 [5].
  • Remaining dependence: these jets will fly on 113 GE F404 engines from the USA [6]. India's fifth-generation fighter is expected only next decade [4], even as the US F-35 flew at Jodhpur [3].
  • Partnership as a route: most of the planned 114 Rafales are to be built in India [4]. The Raksha Mantri stressed that Aatmanirbharta "does not mean isolation" [2].

Analysis in sum: air power provides the calibrated response, and indigenous platforms make it sustainable and sovereign. Each needs the other.

Recent operations show that air power lets India respond in a measured, controllable way, while indigenous platforms keep that response credible. The way forward is to deliver the Mk1A on time, develop an indigenous fighter engine, and favour co-production deals that bring technology into India, so that squadron strength moves back towards 42. That would make Aatmanirbhar Bharat the foundation of India's deterrence.
