Barrier-free tolling replaces the physical toll gate with a digital transaction — first through FASTag's RFID rail, now through GNSS-based and Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. This shift is not merely a road-sector upgrade; it mirrors India's wider e-governance movement from counter-based service delivery to seamless, presence-free citizen interfaces.

  • MoRTH declared all lanes of NH fee plazas as FASTag lanes from December 2019, converting a cash-counter model into one interoperable national platform [1].
