The 272-km Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) cost ₹43,780 crore and runs through 36 tunnels and over 943 bridges. It was dedicated to the nation in June 2025 [1][2]. It serves national security and the Valley's economy in equal measure.

Engineering: what makes both roles possible

  • Chenab Bridge (Reasi) is the world's highest railway arch bridge, 359 m above the riverbed. It is designed to withstand strong earthquake and wind forces [1].
  • Anji Khad is India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. Tunnel T50 (12.77 km) is India's longest transportation tunnel and was built using NATM despite heavy water seepage [1].
  • Seismic dampers and a snow-removal train running ahead of services keep the line open in all weather [1].

Strategic asset

  • The line reduces dependence on roads that close in winter. It works alongside the Sonamarg tunnel on NH-01, which avoids avalanche- and landslide-prone stretches on the route to Ladakh [1][3].
  • Katra–Srinagar takes about 3 hours [2], and Jammu–Srinagar has taken under 5 hours since April 2026 [1]. This deepens the national integration of the UT.

Socio-economic asset

  • Livelihoods: over 5 crore man-days of employment, and 215+ km of access roads serving remote communities [1].
  • Horticulture: a daily timetabled apple parcel train runs from Badgam to Adarsh Nagar (Delhi), with online booking [5]. New freight terminals carry saffron and handicrafts to national markets [1].
  • Tourism and mobility improve across eight districts, from Udhampur to Baramulla [1].

Limits to the claim

  • Time and cost overrun: the line was sanctioned in 1994-95. Its expected cost was ₹37,012 crore in 2022, but it was finished at ₹43,780 crore [4][1].
  • Last-mile gap: the apple service began with only two 8-wagon parcel trains [5], and orchard produce still has to reach the railhead by truck.
  • The line cost about ₹161 crore per km [1], so ticket revenue alone cannot justify it. Its main returns are strategic and social.

USBRL shows that ambitious engineering in the fragile Himalayas can serve both security and prosperity. To realise the economic side fully, Railways should do three things:

  • build cold-chain collection points near stations in the Valley;
  • run Kisan Rail-style timetabled trains through the whole apple season;
  • publish a completion report that explains the rise in cost.

The statement therefore holds: USBRL is as strategic as it is economic. It advances the constitutional goal of national unity and integrity, and SDG 9 on resilient infrastructure.
