1. At a Glance
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India's first Deputy Prime Minister and first Home Minister from 15 August 1947 [8]. He is best known for bringing over 560 princely states, which covered nearly 40% of India's territory and population, into the Union of India [1][12].
- He is called the "Iron Man" (Lauh Purush) [2]. The Hindu argues that his legacy is more complicated than that image. Readers have variously seen him as a foil to Nehru, a "son of the soil" who gave up the prime ministership, a "unifier", and a "right-wing proponent in a centrist party". He also argued for Hindu–Muslim coexistence [13].
- For UPSC, the topic covers GS-I (freedom struggle, post-independence consolidation), GS-II (All India Services, federalism) and GS-IV (integrity and civil-service ethics). It also comes up every year in Prelims through Rashtriya Ekta Diwas and the Statue of Unity.
2. Why in the News
- 31 October 2026 is Patel's 151st birth anniversary [13][6]. The Legislative Department (Ministry of Law & Justice) observed Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on 30 October 2026, before the anniversary [6].
- The 150th birth anniversary commemoration has ended. The PM began it at Kevadia, saying the country would celebrate the 150th anniversary "for the next two years" [4]. The main 2025 events included a parade and programme at Ekta Nagar, a commemorative coin and a postal stamp [3].
- New edition of Rajmohan Gandhi's Patel: A Life. Navajivan first published it in 1991. Aleph has now reprinted it with a new preface saying Patel "is still highly relevant" and warning against dragging Patel, Gandhi and Nehru into present-day political fights [13].
3. Background & Evolution
- 1928, Bardoli Satyagraha: Patel led the farmers' campaign against injustice in Bardoli. It raised his national profile and earned him the title "Sardar" [8].
- April 1947: He addressed the first probationers of the new services and urged them to maintain integrity [10].
- 15 August 1947: He became the first Deputy PM and first Home Minister [8]. He was given the task of bringing 560+ princely states into the Union [1][12].
- All India Services: PIB credits Patel with creating them and calling them the "steel frame" of India [7].
- 2014: The Government of India decided to observe 31 October as Rashtriya Ekta Divas (National Unity Day) [5].
- 31 October 2018: The PM dedicated the Statue of Unity (182 m) at Kevadia, Narmada district, Gujarat [9].
- 2024–26: The two-year 150th-anniversary commemoration ran, ending with the 151st anniversary in 2026 [4][6].

5. Multi-Dimensional Analysis
Historical
- He moved from peasant mobilisation (Bardoli 1928) to running the state as Home Minister in 1947 [8].
- His work on the princely states covered about 40% of Indian territory, which made a "cohesive modern India possible" [1][13].
Administrative / Governance
- PIB credits him with the All India Services as the "steel frame", the basis of a unified administrative structure [7].
- His talk to probationers about integrity is still cited as a model of civil-service values [10].
- The Home Ministry presents him as having laid a base for modern policing and law and order [10].
Constitutional / Federal
- Bringing the princely states into the Union laid the territorial base for the Union of States. The All India Services serve both the Centre and the States, a key part of cooperative federalism [7][1].
Political / Historiographical
- There are competing images of Patel: Nehru's foil, the "sacrificed PM", a unifier, a right-winger. He also argued for Hindu–Muslim coexistence [13].
- Rajmohan Gandhi warns that present-day politicians, journalists and filmmakers misuse Patel, Gandhi and Nehru for current debates. This matters for how historical figures are remembered [13].
Social / Cultural (symbolism)
- The government builds civic identity around unity through Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, the Run for Unity, pledges and the National March [2][14][6].
- Collecting iron from farmers' tools for the statue links back to his roots in peasant movements [14].
6. Recent Developments (last 12-18 months)
- 31 Oct 2025: The PM addressed the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas programme at Kevadia/Ekta Nagar. The event included a parade, a cultural programme with 900 artists, and the release of a commemorative coin and postal stamp [3].
- 31 Oct 2025: The Union Home Minister flagged off the Run for Unity in New Delhi [14].
- 26 Nov – 6 Dec 2025: A National March covered 152 km from Karamsad (his birthplace) to the Statue of Unity [2].
- 2025: Rashtriya Raksha University marked National Unity Day / Lauh Purush commemorations [15].
- 30 Oct 2026: The Legislative Department took the Ekta Diwas pledge ahead of the 151st anniversary [6].
- Nov 2026: Aleph reprinted Rajmohan Gandhi's Patel: A Life, and The Hindu reviewed it [13].
7. Prelims Hooks
- 31 October is observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), decided by the Government of India in 2014 [5].
- 31 October 2026 is Patel's 151st birth anniversary [6].
- He got the title "Sardar" during the Bardoli Satyagraha (1928) [8].
- He was India's first Deputy Prime Minister and first Home Minister (15 Aug 1947) [8].
- He brought 560+ princely states, about 40% of territory and population, into the Union [1].
- He is called the father of the All India Services, which he described as the "steel frame" [7].
- The Statue of Unity is 182 m tall and was dedicated on 31 Oct 2018 [9].
- The statue stands on an island in the Narmada, near Ekta Nagar (formerly Kevadia), Narmada district, Gujarat [11][9].
- Birthplace: Karamsad, Gujarat. The 2025 National March from there to the statue was 152 km long [2].
- A commemorative coin and postal stamp were released for the 150th anniversary in 2025 [3].
- Patel: A Life by Rajmohan Gandhi was first published by Navajivan (1991) and reprinted by Aleph [13].
8. Not Only Persuasion: Where Integration Needed Force or a Vote
- Most rulers signed, but the hardest cases were settled by pressure, not by talks
- On paper, each ruler decided for himself whether to sign the Instrument of Accession (the document by which a princely state joined India). Where a ruler refused, persuasion alone could not finish the job.
- Junagadh: its Muslim Nawab tried to join Pakistan, though most of his people were Hindu. A revolt broke out inside the state, and Junagadh joined India after a plebiscite (a direct vote of the people) in 1948 [16].
-
Hyderabad: it was the last to join, in September 1948, under military pressure [16]. The Union Home Minister himself lists this "police action" among Patel's main challenges [17].
-
Why this matters for the "Iron Man" image
- The note's question stem calls integration a feat of "diplomacy as much as firmness". The evidence supports both halves. Diplomacy brought in most of the 560+ states. Force or a public vote settled the few that held out.
-
A good answer should name both tools. An answer that praises only the persuasion, or only the force, is one-sided.
-
Kashmir shows the limits of a single model
- Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession in October 1947, after tribal raiders attacked. That accession led to the first India–Pakistan war over the state [16].
- Patel had doubts about the special privileges given to Kashmir under Article 370 (the provision that gave J&K a separate constitutional status) [18].
- Kashmir is the case where the accession method did not produce a settled result. It is also where today's politics argues most about what Patel "would have done". Keep to what the sources say.
9. The Statue of Unity: What It Cost and Who Paid
- The money involved is large
- In 2014 the Gujarat government gave Larsen & Toubro a work order worth ₹2,979 crore. Of this, ₹1,347 crore was for the statue itself [21].
-
Critics worked out that the same money could have paid for 2 IITs and 5 IIMs and many farm projects [23]. This is the opportunity cost (what you give up by spending money on one thing instead of another).
-
Adivasi land and the gram sabha were bypassed, critics say
- The statue stands in a Scheduled Area (a tribal region with special constitutional protection). There, the PESA Act, 1996 (a law that gives the gram sabha, or village assembly, a say over land and resources) applies.
- Former Gujarat CM Suresh Mehta called the project illegal. His reason: tribal gram sabhas objected, and the state did not listen [22].
- Reports say about 75,000 tribal people in 72 villages are affected. Rehabilitation is said to be only half done in 32 of those villages [19][20].
-
Some villagers say they were never paid for land taken in the 1960s for the Narmada dam. That same land is now used for the statue project [20].
-
The strongest case for the statue
- The government's case is that tourism will change local lives and give tribal people direct jobs [25].
-
There is some evidence of this. In its first year or so the statue drew 2.9 million tourists and earned ₹82 crore [24].
-
An honest answer
- The tourism benefit is real, and a national symbol has value of its own.
- But the ₹82 crore in revenue is small next to a work order of nearly ₹3,000 crore [21][24]. Also, jobs for some people do not repay the land that other people lost.
- A statue honouring a peasant leader (the iron was even collected from farmers' tools [14]) is being challenged by peasants and Adivasis on the same land. That irony makes a strong GS-IV point.
10. Two Meanings of "Unity" in How Patel Is Remembered
- Official commemoration stresses one kind of unity: territory and administration
-
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, the Run for Unity, the parade and the pledge all focus on the merger of the states and on a strong, single administration [1][2][14].
-
The historical record also holds a second kind: unity across communities
- Rajmohan Gandhi's biography records that Patel also argued for Hindu–Muslim coexistence [13].
-
This side of Patel seldom appears in the yearly celebrations. That is how one image ("Iron Man") comes to push out the others.
-
Why Patel is easy to claim and hard to pin down
- The same man is called Nehru's rival, a "right-winger in a centrist party", and a defender of minorities [13]. Each group can quote the part of his record that suits it.
-
Rajmohan Gandhi's warning is about this habit. Politicians, journalists and filmmakers use Patel, Gandhi and Nehru to fight today's battles [13].
-
How to use this in an answer
- For the "single image" question stem, show both meanings of unity. Territorial unity came through the princely states [1], with force where needed [16][17]. Unity across communities came through his argument for coexistence [13].
- Then make the point that a leader's whole record is lost when a state builds its memory of him around one quality.
11. Anchors for Answers
- Data: 560+ princely states, about 40% of India's territory and population, brought into the Union [1]
- Data: ₹2,979 crore work order for the Statue of Unity project (₹1,347 crore for the statue itself) [21]. About 2.9 million tourists and ₹82 crore earned in its first year or so [24]
- Law/Case: Instrument of Accession: Kashmir signed in Oct 1947, Junagadh joined after a plebiscite in 1948, Hyderabad after the "police action" in Sept 1948 [16][17]
- Law/Case: Article 370: Patel had doubts about Kashmir's special privileges [18]
- Law/Case: PESA Act, 1996: gram sabha objections to the statue project were reportedly ignored [22]
- Law/Case: Article 312: the constitutional basis of the All India Services, the "steel frame" [7]
12. Mains Relevance
- GS-I: Freedom struggle and its stages and contributors (Bardoli); post-independence consolidation and reorganisation (princely states).
- GS-II: Role of civil services in a democracy (All India Services); federalism.
- GS-IV: Contributions of leaders and administrators; integrity and impartiality in public service.
- Possible question stems: 1. "The integration of princely states was as much a feat of diplomacy as of firmness." Evaluate Sardar Patel's role. (GS-I, 15 marks) 2. Discuss the relevance of Patel's "steel frame" vision for the All India Services in the context of current civil-service reforms. (GS-II) 3. "The legacy of national leaders is often reduced to a single image." Critically examine this with reference to Sardar Patel. (GS-I/GS-IV)

15. Common Errors / Trap Areas
- Number of princely states: sources give 500, "over 550", 562 and 560+. Go by how the question frames it. PIB currently uses "over 560" [1][5].
- Ekta Diwas vs. Sankalp Diwas: 31 October is Patel's birth anniversary (Ekta Diwas). Don't mix it up with Indira Gandhi's death anniversary, which falls on the same date.
- Statue of Unity location: it is on the Narmada (Ekta Nagar/Kevadia), not the Sabarmati, and it is 182 m tall. Don't confuse that with the 182 seats in the Gujarat Assembly [9][11].
- Origin of "Sardar": it comes from Bardoli (1928), not Kheda [8].
- Anniversary count: 2025 was the 150th, and 2026 is the 151st [3][6].
