Akbar's tomb, Sikandra
Topic: The Mughal Empire: Babur to Aurangzeb · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Akbar's tomb stands at Sikandra, near Agra. Akbar began it himself, and his son Jahangir completed it c. 1613. It is a five-storeyed building with no main dome, which is unusual for a Mughal tomb. It stands in the middle of a large charbagh, a garden divided into four parts by paths and water channels. Its tiered form echoes buildings at Fatehpur Sikri.
Example
The tomb's grand gateway is decorated with coloured stone inlay and has four white marble minarets, one at each corner. This idea was later used at the Taj Mahal.
Don't confuse with
- Humayun's tomb, Delhi: the tomb of Akbar's father. It has a large double dome, while Akbar's tomb has no main dome.
