Anglican Church
Also called: Church of England · Topic: Renaissance, Reformation and the Scientific Revolution · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Changing Cultural Traditions"
Meaning
The Anglican Church is the Church of England. It was formed when England's rulers cut their link with the Pope in Rome during the sixteenth-century Reformation. The king or queen became head of the Church, so religious and royal power came together. This made England's break with Rome come from the ruler, not from a popular movement.
Example
Henry VIII began the break with Rome. The Anglican Church was finally set up in 1559, with the English monarch as its head.
Don't confuse with
- Lutheran churches: in Germany, Luther's movement grew from below with backing from merchants and towns. In England, the break was led by the ruler.
