Meaning
The Anglo-Burmese wars were three wars, fought in 1824–26, 1852–53 and 1885. Through them the British conquered Burma (now Myanmar) step by step. Each war took more land. In the end all of Burma was made part of British India. Burma was ruled as a province of British India until 1937, when it was separated.
Example
The First War (1824–26) ended with the Treaty of Yandabo, and Burma gave up Assam, Arakan and Tenasserim. In the Second War (1852) the British took Lower Burma. In the Third War (1885), under Lord Dufferin, they removed King Thibaw and annexed Upper Burma in 1886.
Don't confuse with
- Anglo-Nepalese war (1814–16): this war ended with Nepal giving up some land. Nepal was not annexed and stayed a separate kingdom.
