Ashio mine pollution
Topic: Paths to Modernisation: Japan, China, Korea · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Paths to Modernisation"
Meaning
The Ashio copper mine in Meiji Japan poisoned the Watarase river with its waste. The river water damaged the farmland and the lives of the villages downstream. In 1897, Tanaka Shozo led Japan's first protest against industrial pollution. It shows that Japan's fast industrial growth hurt the environment and ordinary people. It also shows that people pushed back against that damage.
Example
In 1897, about 800 villagers joined Tanaka Shozo in a mass protest against the Ashio mine. They forced the government to act and bring in pollution controls.
Don't confuse with
- Minamata disease (1960s): Ashio was Meiji-era copper pollution, and the protests began in 1897. Minamata was mercury poisoning in post-war Japan. It led to compensation and some of the world's strictest environmental laws.
