Topic: The Revolt of 1857 · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Rebels and the Raj"
Meaning
"Badshahi government" means the rule of the Badshah, the Mughal emperor. In 1857 rebels promised to bring it back in place of firangi raj, or rule by foreigners. They held up the Mughal world of the eighteenth century as a fair and familiar order. Under it, Hindus and Muslims had lived side by side.
Example
The Azamgarh Proclamation of 25 August 1857 made a promise to each group under the Badshahi government. Zamindars were promised light revenue demands and merchants free trade. Public servants were promised good pay, and artisans work in the service of kings and the rich.
Don't confuse with
- Firangi raj: the foreign British rule that the rebels wanted to end. The Badshahi government was the Mughal rule they promised to restore.
