Meaning

The Battle of Ain Jalut was fought in Palestine in 1260. The Mamluk rulers of Egypt defeated a Mongol army there. It is often called the first major check on the Mongols. It stopped their advance into Egypt and helps explain why their westward push slowed after the 1260s. Mongol politics also played a part. Most Mongol forces had been sent to Iran and China, so only a small army was left to face Egypt.

Example

In September 1260 the Mamluk army, under Sultan Qutuz with the commander Baybars, beat the Mongol force left in Syria. This happened after Hulegu had taken most of his troops east. Later, the Golden Horde ruler Berke allied with Egypt against the Il-Khans of Iran.

Don't confuse with

  • Fall of Baghdad, 1258: at Baghdad in 1258 the Mongols won and ended the Abbasid caliphate. At Ain Jalut in 1260 the Mongols lost.
