Meaning

The Battle of Bedara, also called the Battle of Chinsurah, was fought near Chinsurah in Bengal in November 1759. Chinsurah was the main Dutch settlement in Bengal. A Dutch force sent from Batavia (in present-day Indonesia) tried to challenge the English East India Company's new power in Bengal after Plassey. The English defeated it. The battle ended any Dutch hope of rivalling the English in Bengal.

Example

After Plassey (1757), Mir Jafar, the new Nawab of Bengal, depended on the English. The Dutch sent troops up the Hooghly river to Chinsurah, but English forces crushed them at Bedara in 1759.

Don't confuse with

  • Battle of Colachel (1741): at Colachel, King Marthanda Varma of Travancore beat the Dutch in Malabar. At Bedara, the English beat the Dutch in Bengal.
