Meaning

The Battle of Chandawar was fought in 1194 near the Yamuna river, close to present-day Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh. Muhammad Ghuri defeated and killed Jayachandra, the Gahadavala king of Kannauj. It came two years after Ghuri's victory at Tarain. It opened the Ganga plain to Ghurid rule. It also showed that Ghuri, unlike Mahmud of Ghazni, wanted to conquer and keep land, not just raid it.

Example

After Chandawar, Ghuri's forces took Kannauj and Varanasi. His general Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who later founded the Delhi Sultanate, held these lands for him.

Don't confuse with

  • Battles of Tarain (1191, 1192): fought against Prithviraja III Chauhan. Ghuri lost the first battle and won the second, which gave him Delhi. Chandawar was against Jayachandra of Kannauj.
