Topic: The Mughal Empire: Babur to Aurangzeb · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Battle of Chanderi was fought in 1528. Babur captured the strong fort of Chanderi in central India. The fort belonged to Medini Rai, a Rajput chief and ally of Rana Sanga. Babur had beaten Rana Sanga at Khanwa a year earlier. Chanderi broke what was left of Rajput resistance in that region. It also pushed Mughal control further into central India.

Example

In 1528, Babur's army surrounded Chanderi fort, in present-day Madhya Pradesh, and stormed it. The Rajput defenders fought to the end, and the women of the fort committed jauhar. Jauhar means jumping into a mass fire to avoid being captured.

Don't confuse with

  • Battle of Khanwa: Babur defeated Rana Sanga himself there in 1527. Chanderi was the follow-up campaign against his ally, Medini Rai.
