Battle of Kasahrada

History glossary

Also called: Battle of Mount Abu · Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 4 "Turning Tides: The 11th and 12th Centuries"

Meaning

The Battle of Kasahrada was fought in 1178 at the foot of Mount Abu, on the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The army of the Chaulukyas (Solankis) of Gujarat, whose capital was Anahilavada (Patan), defeated Muhammad Ghuri there. The defeat stopped his push into Gujarat. Ghuri then turned towards Punjab and Delhi instead.

Example

Most accounts give the victory to the young king Mularaja II. The Jain scholar Merutunga, writing about a century later, recorded a tradition that his mother, Queen Naikidevi, led the army with her son in her lap. Historians are divided on the Naikidevi story, but Ghuri's defeat itself is well recorded.

Don't confuse with

  • First Battle of Tarain (1191): there Prithviraj Chauhan, not the Chaulukyas, defeated Ghuri, near Taraori in Haryana.
