Meaning

Bibi Ka Maqbara ("Tomb of the Lady") is a Mughal tomb at Aurangabad in Maharashtra. It was built c. 1660 by Azam Shah, son of Aurangzeb, in memory of his mother Dilras Banu Begum, Aurangzeb's wife. It copies the design of the Taj Mahal, so it is called the "Taj of the Deccan". It is one of the few major Mughal buildings from Aurangzeb's time.

Example

At Aurangabad, Bibi Ka Maqbara stands in a large garden with a central dome and four minarets, just like the Taj Mahal. It is smaller, though, and only partly faced with marble. Plaster covers much of the rest.

Don't confuse with

  • Taj Mahal: Shah Jahan built it at Agra for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Bibi Ka Maqbara is a later, smaller copy at Aurangabad.
