Charles Ball
Topic: The Revolt of 1857 · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Rebels and the Raj"
Meaning
Charles Ball was a British writer who produced one of the earliest histories of the 1857 uprising. He recorded that the sepoys held panchayats (meetings to take decisions together) every night in their lines at Kanpur. This is important evidence that the revolt involved planning, and that its decisions were made jointly by the sepoys.
Example
Ball's account of nightly panchayats in the Kanpur sepoy lines in 1857 supports the view that "the sepoys were the makers of their own rebellion".
