Meaning

The Chaulukyas, or Solankis, ruled Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan from the 10th to the 13th century. Their capital was Anahilavada (Patan). They were rich from trade and were great patrons of temples, both Hindu and Jain. They are also remembered for defeating Muhammad Ghuri.

Example

In 1178, Ghuri invaded Gujarat and was crushed at Mount Abu by the young king Mularaja II. A later chronicle by Merutunga gives the credit to his mother, Queen Naikidevi. It says she led the army with her son in her lap. Under Bhima I, the dynasty also built the Modhera Sun temple, and his queen Udayamati built the stepwell Rani ki Vav.
