Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi

History glossary

Also called: CWMG · Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"

Meaning

The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi (CWMG) is an official publication of about 100 volumes. It brings together Gandhi's writings, speeches, letters and articles. It is one of the main sources historians use to follow what Gandhi thought and said, year by year. It has to be read with care, because Gandhi often wrote knowing that his words might be printed.

Example

CWMG contains Gandhi's speeches from the Salt Satyagraha of 1930. In them he attacked the salt tax, which he said was set at "more than 1,000 per cent" and called a "fourfold curse". It also has his words at Dandi: "when a whole nation is roused… no leader is necessary."

Don't confuse with

  • A Bunch of Old Letters: a single book that Nehru published in 1958, mostly of letters written to him. CWMG holds Gandhi's own words.
