Debt bondage in the Roman Empire

History glossary

Topic: The Roman Empire · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "An Empire Across Three Continents"

Meaning

Debt bondage meant that free people who owed money had to work off the debt, often almost like slaves. In the Roman Empire many poor families entered this kind of servitude simply to survive. Employers also wrote work agreements as debt contracts so they could control their workers more tightly. It shows that free workers, not just slaves, were often forced to work.

Example

Augustine's letters show parents selling their children into servitude for 25 years. In the great Jewish revolt of 66 CE, the rebels burned the moneylenders' bonds (written records of debts) to win the support of the poor.

Don't confuse with

  • Slavery: a slave was owned as property. A person in debt bondage was legally free but was tied to work by a debt.
