Devapala
Topic: Early Medieval North India: Harsha to the Rajputs · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Devapala was a Pala king of eastern India and the son of Dharmapala. Pala power reached its peak under him in the 9th century. Like his father, he supported Mahayana Buddhism and its great centres of learning. His reign shows the Palas' links with Southeast Asia.
Example
Devapala's Nalanda copper plate records a gift of villages. The income from these villages went to a monastery at Nalanda. That monastery had been built by Balaputradeva, the Shailendra king of Suvarnadvipa (Sumatra–Java).
Don't confuse with
- Dharmapala: Devapala's father. He founded Vikramashila and Somapura and fought hard in the Tripartite Struggle for Kannauj.
