Meaning

Didwana is a prehistoric site in Nagaur district, in the Thar desert of Rajasthan. It has Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic tools one above another. These are the early, middle and late stages of the Old Stone Age. The finds show that this dry desert was once wetter, with lakes, and that people lived there over a very long time. Didwana is a good case of the link between climate and human settlement.

Example

Near Didwana, at the site of Singi Talav, layers of stone tools from all three Palaeolithic stages were found. This shows that people lived there again and again while the climate was wetter.

Don't confuse with

  • Belan valley: Belan (Uttar Pradesh) shows the move from the Old Stone Age to farming. Didwana shows the stages within the Old Stone Age in a desert that was once wetter.
