Dietrich Brandis
Topic: Colonial Economy: Land Revenue, Drain, Deindustrialisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Dietrich Brandis was a German forest expert. In 1864 the British made him the first Inspector General of Forests in India. He brought in "scientific forestry". Under this system, the state controlled forests and managed them mainly for timber. His ideas shaped the colonial Forest Department and the Forest Acts. These rules took control of forests away from the people who lived in them. He matters because he stands for the colonial idea that forests were state property to be used for profit.
Example
Brandis helped set up the Forest Department in 1864. He also helped shape the Indian Forest Act of 1865, which was later tightened in 1878. These laws marked off forest areas where villagers could no longer freely graze cattle or collect wood.
Don't confuse with
- Francis Buchanan: Buchanan was a Company doctor who surveyed Bengal districts such as Dinajpur between 1794 and 1815. He was not a forest administrator. He only looked at landscapes in terms of how they could be made "productive".
