Firangi
Topic: The Revolt of 1857 · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Rebels and the Raj"
Meaning
Firangi is a word of Persian origin, possibly taken from "Frank" (the word from which "France" comes). In Hindi and Urdu it was used for foreigners, often as an insult. In 1857 the rebels used it for the British, and firangi raj meant foreign British rule. Rebels completely rejected this rule.
Example
In 1857, rebel proclamations issued in Hindi, Urdu and Persian called on both Hindus and Muslims to unite and wipe out the firangis. In pargana Barout, after Shah Mal's rising, local people felt that firangi raj was over.
