Meaning
The First Sino-Japanese War was fought between Japan and Qing China in 1894–95, mainly over control of Korea. Japan won and took Taiwan as its first colony. China had long been the source of Japan's culture, so the defeat was a shock. The war proved that Meiji military reforms had worked, and it began Japan's path to empire.
Example
The war ended with the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895. Under it, China gave Taiwan to Japan and accepted that Korea was no longer under its influence.
