Francois Sisten
Topic: The Revolt of 1857 · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Rebels and the Raj"
Meaning
Francois Sisten was an Indian Christian police inspector from Sitapur in Awadh. His account is evidence that plans for revolt were passed from place to place in 1857. It shows that rebels sent messengers between stations and did not rise only on the spur of the moment.
Example
In 1857 Sisten met a Muslim tahsildar from Bijnor. A tahsildar was a local revenue officer. Sisten was wearing Indian clothes, and the tahsildar took him for a fellow Muslim. Hearing that Sisten came from Sitapur, the tahsildar asked how "the work" was going in Awadh, hinting at a shared plan. This tahsildar later became the chief rebel leader at Bijnor.
